It\u2019s not quite trick-or-treating time so you can\u2019t blame it on little kids at your doorstep. Could it be that your house is haunted?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, <em>probably <\/em>not.\nIs your heater on? That\u2019s likely a more realistic explanation for the sounds\nyou\u2019re hearing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But just because it\u2019s a more reasonable explanation doesn\u2019t\nmean it\u2019s an <em>acceptable <\/em>explanation.\nYour heater shouldn\u2019t be making strange or unfamiliar sounds, and if it is it\ndefinitely means something is amiss and needs repair. So what sounds, exactly,\nshould you listen for? Read on! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Loud Bang at Startup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the scariest noises you might hear coming\nfrom your heater\u2014a loud banging sound from the furnace. This is particularly\nalarming if it\u2019s a gas-powered system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this banging happens consistently, rather than when the\nfurnace first starts up, it may have something to with the ductwork or sheet\nmetal siding of your heater expanding and contracting. This can be the result\nof poor duct installation or inadequate furnace sizing. This is definitely\nsomething that needs to be checked on, but it\u2019s even more concerning if this\nnoise only happens during startup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, it might be something like a dirty burner.\nThat doesn\u2019t sound too ominous, but actually, when that dirt builds up too much\nit creates a sort of \u201cmini explosion\u201d when the burners ignite, since they\u2019re\ninsulated by all that dirt. This might not affect your home right now, but it\nrattles the heat exchanger, which can eventually crack and allow harmful gas\nfumes into your living space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Squealing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This can be the result of a lack of lubrication, or blower\nfan belt that\u2019s worn out. This means it\u2019s a fairly easy fix for our\ntechnicians\u2014but that doesn\u2019t mean you can ignore the sound. If you let this\ncontinue for too long, the fan can stop working, stopping your furnace from\nrunning when you need it the most. It\u2019s better to fix the problem now than to\nwait for a sudden heater breakdown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Low Rumbling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A common explanation for this type of noise is that the\npilot flame is too low. Be sure to check the flame to see that it\u2019s blue,\ninstead of yellow or orange. If this isn\u2019t the problem, then a rumbling sound\ncan be attributed to a dangerous carbon monoxide leak, depending on the unit,\nso the best thing you can do is shut the system off and call for help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scraping<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you hear something that resembles the sound of metal on\nmetal? This should never be ignored.
