We’ve probably all seen those movies or TV shows that show a character discovering a terrible leak when a rainstorm hits, or when they really need to get their home ready for a gathering. These scenes are dramatized and typically involve an aggressive jet of water spewing out a cabinet.
In reality, plumbing leaks are generally not that dramatic. This can be a good thing and a bad thing.
The good news is, you’re probably not going to come home to a completely flooded home with thousands of dollars worth of property damage if you have a leak. The not-so-good news is, the damage you do have from a leak can be hidden–underneath your slab, floorboards, or even behind your drywall.
Some more good news is that there are signs you can watch out for that indicate a leak. If you keep an eye out for those signs and then call our team right away, you may be able to mitigate most of the damage. Read on to learn what these signs are!
Your Water Bills Are Increasing
This is sign #1 that you might have a leak. Take a look at your water bills–are you noticing that no matter how careful you are about your water use, the water bills only seem to be increasing? This probably isn’t a plot by your municipal water district. It’s usually instead a warning sign that you have a leak somewhere in your home.
A Decline in Water Pressure
It might pop up first at a kitchen faucet, or perhaps a shower head–but no matter what, reduced water pressure is always noticeable. Please don’t ignore it! This is typically the sign of a blockage, or even a leak in your main water line.
The Sound of Running Water
We want you to walk around your home and turn off all the faucets. Now, make sure no plumbing appliances are running. If there is no reason for you to be hearing water dripping or flowing anywhere, and yet you’re hearing it anyway, it’s probably because there is a leak.
The Water Meter Is Running
Perhaps you did listen for the sound of running water but didn’t detect anything. Take a moment to track down where your water meter is located, and then check for activity that’s occurring without reason. This is another indication of a leak!
The Smell of Mildew or Mold
Did you walk into a room of your house and smell that something seemed off? perhaps it smelled musty or damp. Maybe you even detect the scent of mold. Don’t brush this off as something you’re imagining, because it could very well be the sign of mold or mildew growth in your home, due to a leak.
